A Man’s Guide To Wearing Rings

November 13, 2017

As a man with style, do you wear rings other than a wedding band? If so, what style? Do you think it affects the way people think of you? Does it bother you?

The reality is that every ring sends an important message. For ages, men have worn rings as a symbol of wealth, status, association or commitment. A ring can send different messages like being a member of a fraternity, or that you are not available or even tells others that you’re from a culture not afraid to display wealth on the hands.

For most men, wearing a ring beyond the wedding band is a statement. Be aware, though, that wearing a signature ring is not a statement everyone will understand. But like a lot of style choices we make, they’re present for the people who notice, and being part of the exclusive club that “gets it” is part of the fun. A ring is more than a simple accessory; it is a message that reveals your beliefs, achievements, and commitments. Rings do matter, and you need to understand the message yours send to the world.
Let’s begin with the five rules every man needs to know about wearing rings.

Rule #1: Every Ring has a Message

The rings you put on send a message whether directly or indirectly.  If you attended the Airforce or Naval Academy, a ring easily identifies your association. Rings are also used to send signals of wealth and power; you can identify a person of wealth quickly if he is putting on a precious stone, its size and the clarity of gem.
Searching for a life partner or just looking to have a fun conversation? Engagement and Marriage rings play a vital role in quickly telling us how far we can take a conversation with that handsome gentleman we just bumped into.
Make no mistake, people always notice rings, they may not say anything, but they scanned your hands within seconds of meeting you and deciding to engage in a conversation. So be cautious about what messages you are sending in certain circumstances like interviews, conservative business environment or trips abroad where the casual observer may have their understanding of what your rings mean.

Ring Rule #2 – Be Confident

Are you confident with wearing new rings? If you’re not, instead of faking it till you make it, a better method would be to wear your new ring around your house until you get comfortable with the feel and weight of your ring.
Next, start wearing your ring around people you know and trust to see if they notice. Get comfortable with their comments before you start wearing it out in public.
Also, if there is a story behind your ring, be ready to answer questions about it. Is it a family treasure that has been passed through generations? Was it a ring that you bought in Africa on a summer holiday that reminds you of that trip? No matter what the story is, your ring has the potential to be an icebreaker and start up a great conversation.

Rule #3:  Wear a balanced ring

Men with smaller hands should wear smaller rings, and if you have large hands, please wear larger rings as this will maintain balance. In the same way, if you have slim fingers – keep your rings tiny. Broadband rings are better for men with fuller fingers.
On the occasions when you are given a ring — a class ring at graduation, forexample, make sure you get the right size for your finger.

Ring Rule #4 – Balance your ring with Other Jewelry

How do you balance other jewelry while wearing rings or wear multiple rings? Simple! Wear them on the other hand — don’t pack the rings together. If you are sporting a wedding band and a watch on your left hand, even it out with wearing a bracelet on the right side.
If you want to add another ring, wear do you put it on?preferably the index or opposite ring or finger.
Don’t pack a bunch of rings, bracelets and watch on one hand and leave nothing on the opposite side.

Ring Rule #5 – Consider Compatible Metals

There are no hard or fixed rules on wearing metals that match when it comes to rings, as the most common ring (which is the wedding ring) is fixed. Most men are content to choose between gold and silver. The choice should be influenced by whether your skin has a cool or warm tone.

Wear silver if you have a calm skin tone. if your veins are visible, then your skin has a cool tone

Wear gold if you have warmer color skin, in this case, your veins wouldn’t be visible.
Wear accessories that complement each other– the metal on your belt buckle, watch strap and rings should be in a similar tone. Although it is not necessary to match the metals, it is better to maintain uniformity.
